As we age, we must realize that the hormones that once kept us free of disease, free from gaining weight, free of anxiety and depression, free from losing our drive, free from staying awake all night, free from becoming fatigued, free from becoming frail, and free of just being free… will someday no longer be there to help us live life to its fullest. It’s time we learn what will be needed to not only keep us alive longer, but what will keep us alive and healthy longer…

Our hormones!

The Paradigm Shift in place at the DaSilva Institute is to not accept “Disease-Care” and to embrace “Health-Care,” that is, proactively maintaining good health throughout life.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is being called the best form of therapy for menopausal symptoms for women and andropause for men. It has been featured in bestselling books by Suzanne Somers (“Sexy Years and Breakthroughs”) as well as Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin McGraw’s book entitled, “What’s Age Got To Do With It?” BHRT has also been featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and used as dialogue in the opening scene of this summer’s blockbuster movie “Sex and the City 2.”

Hormonal imbalances are what researchers now believe to be the cause of most age-related disease.

So what’s all the hype about BHRT?

On January 29, 2010, dozens of women joined in the audience and on webcams for part two of the Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy [BHRT] debate on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Suzanne Somers, a long-time advocate for Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), shared her story with the “Oprah” audience.

Oprah Winfrey, who turns 55 this year, writes in the February 2010 edition of “O,” The Oprah Magazine that she felt “out of kilter” and had “issues” for two years that she suspected were hormonal. Upon a friend’s recommendation, Winfrey went to a doctor who specializes in hormones.

Winfrey writes that the hormone specialist told her that her “hormonal tank was empty” and gave her a prescription for Bioidentical estrogen.

“After one day on Bioidentical estrogen, I felt the veil lift,” Winfrey writes. “After three days, the sky was bluer, my brain was no longer fuzzy, and my memory was sharper. I was literally singing and had a skip in my step.”

Winfrey is urging women to “take charge of your health” and says it’s time to “start the conversation” about menopause, andropause and Bioidentical hormones.

The February issue of O, The Oprah Magazine delves into the root of this problem and possible fixes, and Oprah is taking the discussion even farther. “We’re opening a national conversation about hormone replacement therapy,” she says. “This is about your hormones being out of whack, and you don’t even know-we haven’t had a language to talk about it yet.”

What is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a layperson’s term for the treatment of the hormone deficiencies caused by menopause in females and andropause in men using only molecules that are identical to the endogenous hormones found in the human body. BHRT differs from traditional hormone replacement therapy which includes animal-derived and invented molecules that are similar to, but not identical, to human hormones (substitutes for the real thing).

“BHRT” is also used more generally to describe the practice of using only Bioidentical hormones in the treatment of all hormone deficiencies, not just menopause or andropause.

What is the difference between bio-identical and synthetic hormones?

· Synthetic hormones are manufactured in laboratories, for mass consumption, in other words, “one-pill-fits-all.” Because they are synthetic and not natural, they can produce unwanted side effects like nausea, fluid retention, and dizziness. And there are also potential dangers like the increased risk of breast or uterine cancer as well as stroke and heart attacks.

· Bioidentical hormones, contrary to synthetic hormones, are extracted from natural sources, plants like soybean and wild yams, and their molecular structure is identical to that of the hormones produced by our bodies.

Everyone is Unique. So shouldn’t your dose be unique to you?

Because we are all unique and our levels of hormones at any given time may vary from person to person, it is necessary to move away from the “one size fits all” synthetic pharmaceutical approach and move towards an individualized approach of measuring each person’s hormones and balancing those hormones to optimal levels. Bioidentical Hormones can make this happen because they can be compounded into creams and capsules to suit your specific hormone replacements needs, allowing you to receive individualized treatment.

What can Bioidentical Hormones do for you?

Some advantages of Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy are; improved look and feel of hair and skin, weight loss, improved sex drive, improved mental health, lower cholesterol levels, decreased risk of osteoporosis, decreased risk of heart attack and stroke and so much more!
